Unto this Last

Unto this Last was commissioned by the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art and is the second in an occasional series of artistic reactions to the online version of the teaching collection and catalogues that Ruskin assembled for his Oxford drawing schools. The essays provide an insight into the beliefs that underpin his aesthetic position and have inspired artist John Kippin to develop a contemporary response to Ruskin’s life and writing. The greatest challenge was to balance the strong, evocative images and essay text. The solution allowed for the images to sit on their own page and the essay texts were interspersed at the start of every chapter. The PDF had an audio track embedded so when the file was opened the person reading it would hear the essay spoken as they viewed it.
